How do I remove odors from the bed after an accident?Updated 3 months ago
If your dog accidentally pees on the bed, the faster you clean up the mess, the easier it is to prevent any lingering odors. Wipe up any remaining fluid with a dry towel first, and if your bed has a removable cover, take the cover off. If you have an enzyme-based cleaner, try using that first—those are most effective when used before the mess has had a chance to set. You'll want to follow the instructions on the bottle for best results, but typically enzyme cleaners work best when given plenty of time to work on the stain. Once it's done its thing, machine wash the cover in cold water with your usual detergent and air dry or machine dry low heat.
If the accident isn't recent, or the bed has slowly accumulated odor over time despite multiple washes, then we recommend using distilled white vinegar. For very stubborn or very smelly odors, it's best to mix a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water and let the cover soak in it for at least one hour. Then machine wash in cold water with detergent, and add 2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar in place of fabric softener. Air dry or machine dry low heat afterwards. This typically works well for urine, vomit, fecal, and other stubborn odors.
Please note that old or deeply ingrained odors may not fully lift. If the cover cannot be deodorized by the methods above, we do sell the covers separately under the Accessories section of our site. If using the above methods, try one and rinse the cover completely before trying the next. Never mix different cleaning solutions, as this can reduce their efficacy or produce toxic byproducts.
