Are the Premium Finish and Velvet color options the same material as your other colors?Updated 14 days ago

Yes and no—all three options are made from ripstop ballistic material, but each has a different finish applied to it that changes its appearance and feel. All three have the same basic durability, but the different textures and treatments can affect their other attributes. Here's a breakdown of our three cover types:

1. Original Ripstop - As the name suggests, this is our original material. It is a densely woven ballistic fabric with ripstop technology (visible as a grid-like weave pattern) that has a smooth, slick feel to it. It's similar to canvas or luggage material in terms of feel. It is treated with a DWR coating on the exterior and a PU backing to help keep moisture from getting through. Currently available in Obsidian Black, Sandstone, Blue Quartz, Tan, and Sage Green options.

  • Main Pros:
    1. The slick surface doesn't hold dirt or fur, so it's super easy to clean and works well outdoors
    2. Dual water-resistant treatments provide the most protection against fluids
    3. Stiff material is less attractive to chew on than softer or fluffier fabric for some dogs
    4. Runs cool and retains less heat than normal bed fabrics
    5. Naturally odor and stain resistant
    6. Can be personalized with embroidery/heat-transfer vinyl
  • Main Cons:
    1. The slick and stiff feel of the fabric can be uncomfortable for dogs that prefer super fluffy beds
    2. The fabric is a bit noisier than traditional soft fabrics and can be loud when your dog scratches at it

2. Velvet Ripstop* - this material is made by bonding short polyester fibers to the surface of our original ripstop ballistic fabric. It gives the bed a feel that is similar to "flocked" items, making it fuzzier and more plush. This material does not have the same water-resistant treatments as the regular fabric, so it is also more vulnerable to spills and moisture. Available in Light Gray Velvet, Two-tone Gray Velvet, and Gray Ballistic Velvet

  • Main Pros:
    1. The extra texture of the surface makes the bed cover softer and more appealing for picky dogs
    2. Material is much quieter than the original ripstop, especially when dog paws at it
    3. Plush surface retains a little bit more heat to create a cozy spot for your pup
    4. Provides softness and extra comfort without sacrificing durability
  • Main Cons:
    1. Too much scratching or mouthing at an area can scrape the velvet off the ballistic fabric, leaving the bed looking patchy or prematurely worn
    2. Velvet texture can attract fur and dirt more easily, requiring more upkeep to maintain
    3. Velvet material does not have the same water resistant treatments, so it is more vulnerable to fluids. Recommended for indoor use only.
    4. Can stain or hold odors more easily (but it does still tend to wash up very nice)
    5. Cannot be personalized with embroidery or heat-transfer vinyl
    6. Some dogs like the mouth feel of the velvet, and may be encouraged to chew more heavily than they normally would due to this. This can lead to damage to the bed

*The velvet ripstop  material has actually been discontinued, so we have very limited options remaining for it and they will not restock once sold out.

3. Premium Finish Ripstop - This material is made by treating the original ripstop ballistic fabric with a specialized coating to give it a woven-looking appearance. It improves the aesthetic of the bed without impacting its durability, and this coating is more resilient than the velvet. While not as soft or plush as the velvet ripstop, it is a bit softer than the original ripstop. Available in Titanium Premium Finish and Taupe Premium Finish.

  • Main Pros:
    1. The extra texture of the surface softens the bed cover and can make it a bit more appealing for picky dogs
    2. Material is a little quieter than the original ripstop, but it can still be noisier than plush fabrics
    3. The woven pattern gives the bed a more sophisticated look and helps it blend in with other furniture
    4. Provides a little extra comfort without sacrificing durability
    5. Can be personalized with embroidery or heat-transfer vinyl
  • Main Cons:
    1. Extra texture can attract fur and dirt more easily, although less so than a regular bed
    2. Premium Finish material does not have the same water resistant treatments as the original ripstop, so it is more vulnerable to fluids. Recommended for indoor use only
    3. Can stain or hold odors more easily (but it does still tend to wash up very nice)
    4. The surface is still slicker and stiffer than regular fabric, so while it is quieter than original ripstop, it still makes more noise than a normal dog bed
